The 2024 Monaco Grand Prix grid had a shake-up on Saturday evening when both Haas Formula 1 cars were disqualified from the results of qualifying.
Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen had been due to start from 12th and 15th respectively. But the team failing to properly account for the effect of a rear wing upgrade at this race meant it contravened the regulations around the size of DRS wing gaps and its cars were excluded.
They’ll have to start from the pitlane.
Conversely, third-place qualifier Carlos Sainz escaped sanction in a stewards’ probe over the alleged impeding of Alex Albon.
The officials felt he’d had adequate warning from Ferrari and done his best to avoid delaying the Williams.
It means Ferrari has a 1-3 on the grid as Charles Leclerc has pole for his home F1 race for a third time after showing commanding pace throughout practice.
Leclerc has a golden shot at finally getting an elusive Monaco win given championship leader Max Verstappen starts only sixth, a weakness in the Red Bull's performance being exposed in Monte Carlo now the field is getting closer.
Verstappen's team-mate Sergio Perez was only 18th in qualifying, though the Haas exclusions at least move him up two places. Fellow shock Q1 departure Fernando Alonso also benefits, elevated from 16th to 14th.
