“By the way, Lance is my hero” – Fernando Alonso set the tone early for his brotherly love relationship with Lance Stroll at the Aston Martin Formula 1 team.
And since making that declaration at the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix (when he was impressed by Stroll’s drive considering his wrist injuries) he’s made plenty of effort to look out for his new-team mate.
It reached a new peak at the recent Spanish GP when Alonso made clear he wouldn’t challenge Stroll’s sixth place while catching his team-mate.
Given there’s nearly 20 years between them in age and Alonso’s reputation for clashing with team-mates or chewing them up and spitting them out, it wasn’t guaranteed that they’d get on so well.
So why is this relationship turning out so differently to expectations?
Our video tracks the extremes to which Alonso’s gone to help his team-mate – with Max Verstappen even suggesting Alonso’s become Stroll’s “life coach” – and considers why he might be taking it so far.
